Lexus is planning to launch a compact small car, in competition with the BMW 1 Series, Mercedes A-Class and Audi A3 Sportback. With this, Lexus will move into the fast-growing sector of the European market when the Lexus BS is launched in 2008.
Mercedes and BMW have not yet launched their models of the small car segment in North America, even though Audi is all set to launch their A3 Sportback next year.
The Lexus BS would be designed on the BMW 3 Series-size Lexus IS 250 platform. The engine will be a 2.5-liter V6 with 208 horsepower, and a 177-hp diesel. Another hybrid model with a 250-hp, 3.0-liter V6 will also follow later.

The car is good looking, refined and quick. The Lexus catalytic converter and engine is very smooth and gear changes are imperceptible. Space is not its strong suit, and rear leg and foot space can be tight.
Road noise, surprisingly does intrude a bit on certain road surfaces, courtesy perhaps of the extra wide tyres. But the car is generally pretty quiet. As long as you don’t need too much space, this is a very enjoyable car to drive and own.
