The efforts of the global auto giants appertaining safety out-fittings are beginning to show but then what doesn’t improve is the rate of fatalities from drunken driving and motorcycle related deaths. A motorbike isn’t safe unless it is a Honda Gold-Wing but then a Milwaukee Cruiser fanatic won’t go for a Goldwing sans anything.
We can’t blame the riders for fatalities for it is the nature of the ride that is why we now see people devoting time to learning riding ethics so that the risk of an injury is minimal. This was about the bikers but what about the hooligans who get behind the wheel after having gallons of alcohol and the only destiny they make it too, is the ultimate one.
The rules are getting harsher coupled with the fact that the auto manufacturers are investing heavily to develop doodads which stop the drunken devils from getting behind the wheel but the saddening fact is that the statistics aren’t getting any friendlier, as they still reveal an inclining fatality rate owing to the same practice.
So what do we have on hand from the preceding year? A DOT report that reveals that the number of fatalities have declined by 2% compared to 2005. 42,642 people lost their lives in 2006, which are 868 less than 2005. My friend Marty wittingly mentions that the gratifying fact is that ‘as the number of miles driven per year continues to increase the fatalities are on a decline’
Well said Mart but the real problem is that the Drunken driving related deaths still haven’t declined, motorcyclists can be forgiven and we hope that the new technology would come up which would see this ultimately getting blown away. Models like the Goldwing from Honda therefore deserve a ten-on-ten for ushering such technology.
Well, it all boils down to the drunken driving fatalities, companies like Nissan and a few others are developing techniques to check the soakers from getting behind the wheel, yet it no way means that the fatalities would reduce. There has to be strong campaigning globally to make people aware that a nice booze session and a drive after that means death beyond anything, only then would the related technology be worthwhile.
