foam car

Spira foam car is the latest to get in line for the Automotive X-Prize. As for its looks, the designer of the car, Lon Ballard says the inspiration came from er, crocs and flipflops. Owning up to a thing like that takes a hell lot of courage, but not more than driving in a car that is 90% foam. The 302 pound Spira is 90% foam, with the body reinforced by a polycarbonate and aluminum cage.

Power for the three wheeled two-seater comes from a 100cc engine that can take it to a respectable 70mph, and get 100 mpg of efficiency. And since foam never had trouble floating in water, the Spira can float as well. It will soon be ready for limited production in Rayong, Thailand. That place is somehow called the “Detroit of the East.”
