aston martin db9

Sounds surprising indeed, but reports suggest the automaker may be looking to outsource production for its cars, a first in nearly a century old history of Aston Martin. Aston Martin factories are working nearly to full capacity in order to meet the demand for the DBS, V8 Vantage and DB9.

The Financial Times says it has seen documents that reveal plans to outsource production to European coachbuilders. The model outsourced for production is likely to be the four-door Rapide, which is expected to debut in 2009.

Ramblings of outsourcing by Aston Martin have been around for sometime and the new claim just makes the point stronger. Companies to which the production may be outsourced include Pininfarina, Karmann group, Magna and Valmet. Outsourcing production may provide a boost to the manufacturing capabilities, but it remains to be seen how this automaker, which prides itself for being ‘British’ copes with it.
