As per the ECs legislation early this year for all car manufacturers that all the new cars that will be sold in the EU-27 would have to reach the 120g CO2/km target by 2012, Audi is planning a new A3 model in Europe that the company claims will emit less than 120g CO2/km.
The company has not stated any engine specifications to reach the target but they have commented that the new model will benefit from direct-injection engine technology and gearbox modifications.
These models will have increased transmission ratios for the third and the fifth gears and an additional high-ratio sixth gear.
Another enhancement is a gear shift indicator that will inform the rider when to shift gears according to the engine load and speed at which the car is going.
The energy efficient cars are named Audi A31.9TDIe and A3 Sportback and will be priced at €22,600 and €23,500 respectively.
The cars are expected to hit the European markets by this spring.
