BMW, working with researchers in Graz and Vienna, has seen some great results for the Hydrogen Combustion Engine. The engine has been built on a diesel-engine like geometry, it utilizes spark ignition and uses H2 high-pressure direct injection technology. During tests, the engine managed maximum specific powers of up to 100 kilowatt per liter of displacement, with an efficiency of 42%, which is nearly the same as that of a turbodiesel engine.

Encouraging results during the early concept stage of the engine can be great motivational factors. With efficiency at par with turbodiesel engines, we can expect even better results as the technology progresses, and have a powerful, efficient and non-polluting source to power cars.
