The hottest weapon in Volkswagen’s arsenal just got hotter! The much talked about fastest car to go into production, the Bugatti Veyron will soon come in a Targa avatar.

Veyron will not become a complete convertible but will be a semi-convertible sporting a targa top over the two passengers. The Veyron Targa is speculated to have a glass roof engineered by German specialist Webasto, who also put the folding aluminium and glass hardtop on VW Eos.

The detachable glass roof cannot be stored inside the Veyron. But if the weather turns bad, a fabric cover that can be pulled into place will be available. Reports say the Veyron Targa will have to undergo certain structural modifications that will pull down the performance just a bit. The top speed of Veyron Targa will now be ‘only’ 217mph, as compared to 253mph of the Veyron, hardly noticeable. Even at the reduced speeds, the Veyron Targa will be able to stake its claim for the title of world’s fastest open top car!

To compensate for the weight brought on by the modifications to strengthen the EB16.4 Veyron, the Targa will sport carbon-fiber doors and hood. The grille will be slightly restyled and new headlamps with adaptive function will be incorporated into the targa. These changes will also become visible in the EB16.4 later. There are only 80 Veyron Targas up for sale and will hit the market probably in 2008.

Predictions of the Veyron not lasting for long have proven wrong. Bugatti recently decided to produce 75 Veyrons instead of the previously announced 60, and with the coming of the semi-convertible, expect more sales.
