GM’s UK subsidiary Vauxhall is set to launch vehicles that can ‘talk’. The next-generation Vauxhall Calibra will come to the market with a technology that will make the roads much safer.

Named vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V), it employs a highly sophisticated GPS based technology that will allow the vehicles to communicate with each other. Vehicles in short range can share information on location, speed and direction of travel. If the system gauges that the driver should be informed, it is capable of sending audible or visual cues to the driver. The system may even decide to send vibrations through the seats to alert the driver!

The electronics will apply brakes automatically if the system feels that the driver is not taking action, the brake lights will be flashed automatically to warn the driver behind too. Any possible rear end collisions or un-indicated lane changes by other drivers will not go unnoticed by V2V technology. This system will also help the driver to overtake vehicles on blind curves.
This intelligent system reminds me of Herbie the Wondercar, a few more years and we might have a car as intelligent as Herbie in the market!

Vauxhall has made a beautiful chapter in road safety, I hope other auto manufacturers follow. Safety on the road is a key concern to all and more systems that make roads safer are welcome.
