The Gas-Guzzling monsters of the road are under threat following a notification by the European Commission that all car manufacturers have to tune their cars in such a fashion that they do not emit more than 120 grams of carbon per kilometer of operation.

The new notification will come into effect from 2012. So we can say that the so called monsters of roads and the Chelsea Tractors have just five years to reduce emission below the permissible level.

The new notification has also been issued because of a failure of the agreement that the European Car makers had signed in 1998 and had mentioned that the car makers will reduce the emissions by 25% by 2008. The agreement could not be met and the car makers are only able to reduce the emissions by 13% and the agreement ends next year.

The Citroen C3 Diesel is the only car that can be said as prepared for the new notification as the car already produces only 120 grams of carbon per kilometer.

If we talk about the Chelsea Tractors then we have to consider that these cars produce the maximum amounts of carbon like the Supercharged Range Rover Sport V8 emits 376 grams of carbon. The petrol powered five door Ford Focus 1.6 also emits 184 grams.

Hybrid cars such as the petrol-electric Toyota Prius are regarded as one of the greenest cars as it produces just 104 grams of carbon per kilometer.

Car Makers that the new notifications are applicable only for the new cars which can be devastating for the sports car makers such as Porsche and other SUV makers such as Land Rover, and the results can be so devastating that these manufacturers can be forced out of business.

Toyota is already selling the basic model of Prius at £16,000 which is far below the production cost of the car. The extra cost of the car has been added to the luxury models of the car.

The new legislation will not only apply to the European car makers but will also be applicable to all the car manufacturers of the world who export cars to Europe.

This will also make the cars more expensive and some car makers have also commented that the cost of cars will increase by £5,000 if this new legislation comes into action.

This will also make the car manufacturers move out of Europe and move somewhere to the East where the countries have no strict regulations on Emissions.
