Nobody likes a flat tyre. Especially if it goes bust while you’re out trailing you ex-wife’s new fiancé! Worry not, for ContiSeal has come to address all our collective flat-tyre woes. The self-repairing tyre, developed by German rubber specialists Continental, features a tacky, viscous coating inside the tread which repairs itself almost instantly after a nail or other shape substance pierces its surface. The lining can self-heal holes of up to five millimeters in diameter after the intruding object is removed. According to Continental, ContiSeal scores over the stiffened sidewall technology of run-flat rubber in that the new technology can be fitted to standard wheel rims and does not require a low-pressure warning system. But this has raised concerns in the tyre industry that lack of such warning systems can lead to motorists driving with potentially weakened rubber. That theory and the effectiveness of the ContiSeal will both be put to test when the tyre goes on sale this summer.
