A lot of effort is going into making cars autonomous vehicles, but the results so far haven’t been very appealing. They’re slow, unpredictable and unworthy of any real-life use. Japanese company ZMP Inc intends to make the scenario a bit different with the launch of their RoboCar platform. The 1:10 scale robot weighs around 3kg and can be used for automotive technologies.
The Linux-based bot has CCD stereo cameras, an image recognition module, Wi-Fi, gyros, three axis acceleration sensors, five rotary encoders mounted on the engine and each wheel, and eight infrared range sensors. It will be used for verification of autonomous algorithms, collision avoidance algorithms and to research human-automobile interaction. Availability of the system is likely to make research into autonomous automobiles much cheaper, and possibly, faster. Shipments will begin in June and it will cost $6,119.
