In Japan, diesel engines are unpopular and slotted only for the trucks — they are considered slow, polluting and loud.
Therefore, to shatter this Japanese misconception, DaimlerChrysler AG has plans to launch diesel models of its Mercedes-Benz in Japan, starting this autumn.
President of the German Association of the Automobile Industry, Bernd Gottschalk, pointed out the benefits of diesel over gasoline — cheaper and emits less carbon dioxide. He also tells that such vehicles will prevail over gasoline-electric hybrid vehicles in terms of environmental protection and running costs.
Besides, he foretells the success of diesel-engine vehicles in Japan - to manage 5 percent share of the Japanese auto market by 2010.
