German autogiant DaimlerChrysler has summoned its sold 298,000 vehicles in the US to repair defective airbags. The recall includes the entire range of 2005 Dodge Caravan and Chrysler Town and Country minivans.
The rationale for such a huge repairing exercise is the use of salt on the roads during the winter in various American metropolises to keep their highways free from fog and snow. DaimlerChrysler in a study has found that the salt could eat away the brass sensors inside the airbags disabling the protective shield.
In addition to this, the company also enlarged the warranty on a further 133,000 minivans. Daimler Chrysler in a notification on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website said,
Certain minivans are being recalled in states which use large amounts of salt for road de-icing, to replace their upfront airbag sensors.
The companies is set to inform the owners of the vehicles with corrosion and cracks in their brass censors and substitute the brass fittings with steel and other material.
