Google Street View vehicles with their high-tech cameras have been quite the talk of town, but this panorama rig, the Photo Trail created by Roy D. Ragsdale is an impressive one, and works much like Google’s system. Created as part of the “disruptive technologies” course at the United States Military Academy, the system can capture georeferenced 360 degree panorama images.
The images captured by the system can be viewed on a web browser. The system was created using easily available, off-the-shelf products from the market, and open source software. It cost Ragsdale around $300 to build the system. You can view the construction of the system and its background here.
