The world of in-car entertainment had received a breakthrough with the launch of Alpine’s dashboard display system in 2006. The system generated two different images for the viewers (i.e, for the driver and the other passengers) from a single screen. The display could ideally be used for displaying entertainment programs for passengers, while helping the driver with a satellite navigation map.

Blaupunkt, in association with parent company, Bosch (the automotive parts suppliers), has recently come up with their own dashboard display system—-named Dual View. This system will use a single screen that measures 8 inches(across) and would include a backlit LCD and a special mask over the liquid crystal layer. The images generated on the screen (from the right and the left) would be simultaneously displayed, and would be specifically distributed on pixel columns present adjacently. The special mask would show only those pixel columns that are on the left or right (depending on the angle of viewing)—and hence, two separate images would be displayed on the screen.

Unlike most in-car entertainment systems that display images only when the vehicle stops, the Dual View, for the first time ever, would run programs even when a car is in motion. This will ensure that passengers enjoy programs without any disruption, while the driver, using the satellite navigation map displayed, would drive easily and safely.

Blaupunkt plans to make Dual View available in the markets next year. Although the European carmaker in whose vehicles Dual View would make their first appearance has not been named, it appears as if the all-new BMW 7-series would have this display system before others. Indeed, the 7-series cars have always encouraged the use of new and innovative technology in vehicles—and hence, if Dual View debuts in these car-models, it would hardly be a matter of great surprise.
