Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone has raked in $8.1 million from the auction of an ultra rare vehicle- the 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Roadster. The car is one of only 26 of such beauties ever built.
Auction house RM Auctions described the vehicle as ‘at the pinnacle of classic cars’. The car has changed many owners including Studebaker designer Brooks Stevens who displayed the car in his museum for nearly three decades and converted it into a left hand drive.
Ecclestone acquired the roadster in 1995 and managed to recover the original UK number plate. It is reported that Ecclestone is putting up a number of cars he had been keeping in storage up for auction; including the forty rare beauties he brought to this auction.
