Rolls into the Guinness record book

The two auto giants made it to Guinness by parading their cars all lined up together. In fact MINI was already in the book; Ferrari finally fulfilled its wish.

Ferrari and the Ferrari Owners Club GB together at Silverstone on Saturday 9 June, 2007, set an incredible new Guinness World Record for the ‘Largest Parade of Ferrari Cars’.

The record attempt honored Ferrari’s 60th Anniversary, as well as the 40th Anniversary of the Ferrari Owners Club of Great Britain. With an astonishing parade of 385 Ferrari cars which is more than triple the previous record, the estimated value of the cars in the parade on Saturday was in excess of £60 million.

The cars completed a distance of three miles with each car being no farther than two car lengths apart ,counted at the beginning and the end of the parade, drove two abreast around the entire circuit.

With several cars from every decade of the Prancing Horse’s proud and unique heritage, ranging from a 250 California Spider and a 275 GTB/C through to the ultra-desirable 250GTO and the ultra-exclusive FXX; as well as the iconic supercars like the F40, F50 and Enzo, Ferrari was the greatest Gig in the sky giving a birds eye view.

If all good things were to happen together the world would have been a paradise but for once it was, at least from the automotive perspective.

Last year MINI created history making the longest continuous line of 269 cars in UK. In fact as a fairy tale to the car lovers, a day after the record breaking brigade of Ferrari, 273 old and new MINIs lined up at Virginia Beach and stretched over five miles.

Celebrities like Survivor Season One finalist, Rudy Boesch, led the parade of cars although I believe Rowan Atkinson was a better contender as the world recognizes him with his yellow Mini cooper to an extent that BMW can well have him on the moniker.

Within two hours the last MINI was on the go. Amazingly, 40 minutes later the group had covered 5.8 miles making the recorders re-write their stats. These tiny little cars assembled and then drove along in an uninterrupted chain. As compared to the number of cars last year, just penny pinching four were added which is saddening.

Events like this not only get into the book but also awake the interest of people in these so long gone cars as the new hybrids are set to eat ‘em all.

According to the grapevine, due to the speed restriction on the city roads, it was the slowest-ever Ferrari cavalcade, which could harm their ‘fast and furious’ reputation. As far as MINI is concerned ‘tiny tots’ gathered themselves to play in the rain.
