It appears that Ferrari filed for a patent with the European Patent Office, for a 4WD system with hybrid propulsion. Ferrari filed for the patent back in February for a system “improve the drivability of a sports car in conditions of poor grip.” Ferrari’s filing shows a 4WD system using two powerplants, each for a pair of wheels. This eliminates the need of transfer cases and drive shafts.

It is very likely, that when employed in Ferrari cars, the system will let drivers decide if they want to go with the RWD, or switch to 4WD mode. There might also be an option for propulsion by electric power only, that will however, be limited to lower speeds only, but will help in reducing the car’s carbon footprint. All this of course, depends on when and if Ferrari really does decide to use this system.
