Volkswagen of America Inc. has announced a major recall of 790,000 vehicles owing to some glitch in brake light switch.

The affected models include 1999-2006 Golf and GTI models, 2001-2005 Jettas, 2001-2007 New Beetles and the 2004 R32, all in United States. The problem rectification process is commencing in late April. In rectification process, some Jettas and New Beetles of the last year are also included.

The automaker in its report to U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said:

The brake light switches in the vehicles could malfunction if they were improperly installed and the light could either remain on or not function, which would fail to provide other motorists with the proper braking signal and potentially lead to a crash.
