Ford has decided that it will pretty much make Electric Power Steering (EPS) a regular feature when it concerns to its vehicles by 2012. By the year 2012, Ford claims that almost 90% of all its vehicles will incorporate the EPS system and from then on it will be mandatory for a Ford vehicle to have one. This system will not just be any ordinary system put in to show off and to rope in extra cash. Ford is putting the best EPS system possible on its vehicles so as to make your driving experience a lot more special and easier.
Electric power steering systems have numerous advantages over traditional hydraulic boost systems. The older style hydraulic pump systems are driven directly off the engine and run all the time even when not needed. EPS, on the other hand, uses an electric motor tied to the steering gear and provides only as much boost as needed and only when needed. Because the EPS is not driven by the engine, it provides greater packaging flexibility in the engine compartment. All this only means a lot more comfortable ride for you and your family.
The 2008 Ford Escape, Mercury Mariner, and their respective hybrid models are already benefiting from EPS. For 2009, Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan and Lincoln MKZ will join these products, with other new and refreshed vehicles, including the Ford Mustang, Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator, to follow over the next three years. Ford seems very serious about this big new venture and it is nice to know that the future hybrid vehicles will be carrying this cool technology across the board. Ford need not have done this, but they did go out and got this done. Well done to the guys!
