OK, you are taking hell lot of steps to reduce the fuel your car consumes, one trick after the other but hey, you cannot seem to find any result. You must be tired as much as I am! I found this great article on CNN and it deals with the many tricks that you and I usually do to cut down fuel consumption; actually, they are all a big mistake. You will be surprised too...take a look.
Top five gas-saving myths:
1 - It’s all about your MPG rating: The way you drive your car is more important than the MPG given by EPA. Phillip Reed of Edmunds.com says EPA ratings were off about 14 percent on average.
2 - Gas saving products help fuel efficiency: The oil or gasoline additives that are sold as fuel boosting products are just a sham. EPA says no such products improve fuel efficiency and can even damage your engine. So that means, you will be losing anywhere from $5 to $100 for nothing. Get a refund even if the money-back guarantee has expired, says the Federal Trade Commission.
3 - You need the best octane: Definitely not! Most engines are designed to take regular unleaded gasoline, which has an octane rating of 87. Using higher-octane premium gas does not improve performance and is just a waste of money.
4 - All gas rebate cards are created equal: There are major differences between cards. Look specifically at card fees. According to Curtis Arnold of cardratings.com, some cards have annual fees of $20; Interest rates can also vary from 13 percent to over 20 percent and do not forget to check the expiry date. Compare different cards at cardratings.com or cardweb.com.
5 - Air conditioning wastes gas: What a relief, according to Edmunds.com the waste is minimal. However, driving with your windows down at high speeds can create an aerodynamic drag.
