According to the latest Consumer Reports National Research Center, the priorities of parents and young adults, when it comes to shopping for a used car, are strikingly similar. The online survey included 1,338 parents and 1,200 teens and young adults from nationally representative sample.
Highlights of the Consumer Reports National Research Center:
Both groups favor the same types of used vehicles — small cars and family sedans.
Reliability, price, and fuel efficiency are among the most important buying factors for both groups.
Safety was a leading concern for both groups. Parents ranked it number two, while their children listed it fifth.
Air conditioning is a priority for both. 87 percent of parents and 86 percent of youngsters ranked it first among the wanted features.
More than two-thirds of both groups said they would buy a used car that was at least six years old (2000 model year) or older-and inexpensive.
Both groups agreed on the ranking of the most sought after brands:
1.Ford
2.Chevrolet
3.Honda and
4.Toyota
Fifty-five percent of parents and 41 percent of young people would opt for a small car over some other vehicle type. Family sedans were the second most popular vehicle.
Comfort, style, engine power, and accessories ranked high for the youth.
Parents would go for a second hand vehicle that costs around $6,600 while the youths’ budget is higher, around $8,200 on average.
