At an age where we talk about cars priced above millions of dollars, rolling out a car, which costs less than $ 2200, sounds bizarre. If you consider an Economy like India where the population growth rate is faster than the growth rate of Agriculture such lowly priced cars are more than welcome. When Tata Motors unveiled the prototype of its Rs 1, 00, 000 car the whole nation went crazy. That product is eagerly awaited and guess what there is a new competitor to topple it with an even lower pricing.
Global Automobiles Ltd, Kolkata is planning to launch the cheapest car on Indian blacktops in collaboration with the Chinese Govt owned Automaker, Guangzhou Motors’ Company, by July 2007. The car will be brought in a semi-manufactured state from Guangzhou’s production facility in China. .
Santanu Ghosh, chairman, Global Auto mentioned:
Our car will be more affordable and will be brought out from our existing component manufacturing facility at Hoogly in West Bengal. We already have 30 acres of land and negotiations for another 70 are in progress.
This car could potentially sell faster than ‘Hot Cakes’ bearing in mind the fact that even the low-middle class Indian families would find it affordable but what pricks my mind is that: How will they manage to bring out something, which will be safe, fuel efficient and above all eco-friendly for mere peanuts? Trusting the Chinese Technology in itself is risky business and to bring out an inexpensive product with Chinese Technology incorporated is a debatable issue. Anyways, I wish them all the best and hope that they at least produce something, which could move on fuel, for a price that squat!
