In the quest to go green and save fuel on the way, people are turning to green technologies as a savior. Everything green is mostly considered good, but as it is, going green may create more serious problems than those it solves. Green Tires have been showered upon by a heap of praises; the California Energy Commission sees them as an excellent way to reduce fuel consumption.
Estimates say green tires could save 100million gallons of oil in a year if every motorist switched to them. What makes these tires ‘green’ is their low-rolling-resistance which saves fuel by limiting contact between the tire and the tarmac. But this poses another problem, tires with low ‘contact patch’ are prone to skidding and slipping, the lower this ‘contact patch’, more are the chances of slipping. There is little use in ‘going green’ with these tires if they compromise safety. Though fuel saving methods need to be encouraged, these should definitely not come at the cost of safety.
