Is this the end of big coupes and SUVs?
High gas prices..... a terrible menace! Seems like there would be no parking spaces left for the big ones. After all, compacts are the in-thing now.
Rightly so! Many species all over are adopting a ‘compact’ lifestyle. Gone are the large vans and SUVs.
SUV are getting cheaper to rent: Avis, Boston, is renting SUVs for less than a subcompact: a subcompact Chevrolet Aveo rents for $70.99, while an intermediate SUV, Pontiac Vibe is $62.99.
Edith Mancilla, area manager Anaheim and Orange, Calif., has rented out 40% fewer SUVs this spring than she did previously — dropped the price of SUVs $49, from $64 last year, and raised the price of her compact cars, from $25.99 last year to about $34 now.
Ken Buja, a 42-year-old computer programmer opted for a compact Chrysler Sebring than Jeep Wrangler (for the same price). He states:
I would be driving long distances and needed something that would be fuel-efficient. After protesting, he eventually got the keys to a smaller Chrysler Sebring.
