The UK is testing a system that will make it impossible for motorists to speed, or at least that’s what the “safety campaigners” are gunning for. The system deployed for testing has two modes, voluntary and advisory, plus, there’s an override button as well. Advisory mode is a rather tame one, it shows a smiley when the driver is at or below the speed limit but quickly turns to a frown as the driver exceeds the speed limit.
The voluntary mode is the evil twin, it won’t let you go past the speed limit no matter how hard you hit the accelerator. The override button of course could help you through, but we’re guessing there are plenty of situations on the road where not being able to speed up, or taking time to fumble for some button won’t give pretty results.
Being trialed by Transport for London, this Intelligent Speed Adaption system uses satellites to accesses a database of speed limits on the road, and then enforces them. While we are all for road safety, this idea does not sound like a smart one.
