That is truly the question that we are asking you today. The question is much more beyond just one piece of work or a body of work of one artist. It is exactly about what actually constitutes art and who gets to define what art is and what is not? Sometimes is a great masterpiece any different from a piece of trash put up by a 5 year old? Is it the name and the reputation of the maker that define art? History will tell you that most often that is indeed the case. Any work put up by a famous guy is always a wonderful piece of art and something similar done by an up and coming bloke is trash. That is why reputation matters and you need to guard it with your life.

We are asking you this week if “The Spindle”, a piece made by California artist Dustin Shuler’s sculpture of eight cars pierced and stacked on a huge spike at Cermak Plaza which is being offered for sale on eBay for a minimum bid of $50,000 is indeed art. The question is obviously very subjective and each one of us is entitled to his own opinion. For me art is a form of expression which the artist chooses to express his deepest and most creative feelings and thoughts. So for me the sketch of a 5 year old is as special as a master stroke by Da Vinci or Picasso.

But is this giant pile of cars just nonsense? I have never heard the logic behind this yet and so I will have to conclude that it is not really much of an art form for me that needs to be bought at such price. Moreover, there is little space here to keep something like that. But as they say, to each his own and so you decide and let me know.
