Manufactured in 1965 by the Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Limited, Crewe, Cheshire, this Phantom V Art Car owned by John Lennon could almost be titled the ultimate retro luxury car with its extraordinary customizations that followed in the years to come. Lennon had the car’s rear seat modified into a double bed and had the car fitted with a custom interior/exterior sound system, a Sony television, a telephone and a portable refrigerator. In 1967 the car got its £2,000 “Psychedelic” paintjob done by Dutch team of gypsy artists commissioned by J.P. Fallon Limited, a coachworks company located in Chertsey, Surrey. Of course the car drew the attention of critics and fans alike and an old lady even attacked the car for outraging the symbol of British dignity! The car was subsequently brought out by Jim Pattison’s Ripley International Inc. for exhibition at Ripley’s “Believe It Or Not” museum in 1985 for a sum of $2,299,000 making it the most expensive and famous art car of the time. Watch the car in action in the tribute video with Lennon and the “Lucy in the sky with diamonds” sound track after the jump.
