While many people work hard to create intricate designs on their cars and end up spending a fortune on it, for nature creation of such delicate patterns is just another day at work. It’s winter and most of us have to cope with frost on the cars, but the frost can also create wonderful patterns.

On a cold night Stuart Dent noticed something on his car, as he went closer to investigate, he saw that it was actually frost that had created beautiful patterns on his car. Called ‘fern frost’, these patterns are formed when water molecules arrange themselves in six-sided patterns. The sheet metal of cars, being a good conductor, cools down quickly with falling temperature and provides an ideal place for water vapor to settle and freeze, creating frost.

The formation of frost however, is dictated by dust and scratches on the surface. So as the ice crystals interlock, they actually form a random design dictated by the above factors. The exquisite pattern on Mr. Dent’s Rover must have melted with the first rays of the sun, but it surely would have been a memorable experience which has also brought some fame to the man.
