Lexus is working to develop an eight-speed gear box for its 380-hp engine in its LS series. With the changing trend, the number of gears have started to mark the status of a luxury roadster. Moreover, more number of gears directly affect the performance of the vehicle’s engine. The wider span between high and low gears makes better use of engine power. The tighter ratio allows for better performance, smoother delivery of power, and better gas mileage.

One major question that concerns this issue is the reliability of this system as more complex system means introduction of more components and therefore more chances of failure. This may increase the maintenance cost but it is not a big problem as with improved manufacturing technologies such risks can be reduced. And nothing comes for free.

Transmission maker ZF is developing an eight-cog box that will probably be used in machines developed by BMW, Ford, and Volkswagen. We may also listen shortly that General motors is also joining the race.
