Indian automaker Mahindra & Mahindra has launched an upgraded version of its bestseller, the Scorpio in India. Called the M-Hawk, the vehicle boasts a new 2.2-L engine that delivers 120hp. M & M got help from experts AVL in developing the new engine and from Lotus for the suspension.
It is reported that Lotus spent months in testing to improve the ride and handling of the vehicle. Keeping the design layout intact, Lotus helped in tweaking the suspension and changed damper settings with fine tuning of springs and linkages. This helped improve ride-handling, the biggest chink in Scorpio’s armor.
Changes in appearance of the M-Hawk are hardly noticeable. Only additions to the exterior include an M-Hawk badge on the front fender and new alloys. Interiors also remain the same. Small changes like steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, tire-pressure sensors and rain-sensing wipers have been included. The M-Hawk price goes up by $2,500 as compared to the regular Scorpio, which will continue its production run.
With Mahindra slated for an entry into US market by late 2008, the M-Hawk could be sent Stateside. It is likely that the new 2.2-L engine will power Mahindra’s SUVs and pickups in the USA. The M-Hawk will be displayed at the 2008 Indian Auto Expo in New Delhi next month.
