Remote controlled cars are the most coveted toys, but people eventually “outgrow” these small toys, that’s why we need a real world, real R/C car. The remote here is an iPod Touch connected by a 3G system to an Ubuntu Linux system on the RX-8. The hack by Jonathan Oxer converts his car to a WiFi hotspot and gives him the ability to access controls remotely.
The system can turn ignition on/off, lock and unlock the car, and pop the trunk. For another shot at automation, the car has an RFID reader in the back right window, and an RFID tag implanted in Jonathan’s arm. So he just has to walk past the car, and it will unlock itself and start the engine.
