Mazda’s latest concept, Furai, translated as ’sound of the wind’ is up for a debut at the NAIAS. Along with the Furai, the company will also show a heavily revised new RX-8. The Taiki concept, which made its debut at Tokyo, will come for a North American debut with the Furai. The company has released a teaser shot of the new concept.
Based on Mazda’s ‘Nagare’ design theme, the Furai is a race-bred sports car. Chassis used in the concept is Courage C65, which the company showed at ALMS a couple of seasons ago. Power comes from a 450-hp three-rotor rotary engine that uses ethanol (E100) as fuel.
Franz von Holzhausen, Mazda’s North American director of design says:
Furai purposely blurs boundaries that have traditionally distinguished street cars from track cars. Historically, there has been a gap between single-purpose racecars and street-legal models - commonly called supercars - that emulate the real racers on the road. Furai bridges that gap like no car has ever done before.
