Piping hot favorites Ford Mondeo and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, the tiny Mazda2 has bagged the prestigious 2008 World Car of the Year award (WCOTY). The little Mazda beat 38 other new vehicle entrants from around the world to walk away with what is the automobile equivalent of the Miss Universe beauty pageant, also making it into the top three design finalists along with Audi’s R8 supercar and the quirky Volvo C30 on its way to the proverbial crown.
A panel of world design experts and a jury of 47 international automotive journalists voted the Mazda2 the overall winner through a secret ballot using their extensive experience in their respective fields. Though the award can in no way predict the car’s salability in the future, we’re hopeful that buyers just might be persuaded by its disarming charm just like we were.
