In a war zone, an enemy is an enemy, even if he/she is a doctor or a rescuer trying to get hapless victims of the war to safety. To make this very onerous and dangerous task of rescuing injured soliders and war victims to safer ground in the quickest possible time, Israel’s Fisher Institute for Air and Space Strategic Studies has teamed up with a few local companies to develop a Unmanned Aerial Vehicle specially for this task. For this, the futuristic MedUAV will be built as a hybrid between a drone and a air ambulance. A UAV expert can guide the MedUAV to the conflict zone through the air at a speed of 150 knots and a height of 10000 feet.
After landing, the MedUAV can also traverse as a land vehicle to reach the victims. Then it will pick up the wounded soldiers and victims and fly them back to safety. The biggest challenge the designers may have to face is to make the system efficient and sensitive enough to handle injured people. Also, the MedUAV will have to be strong enough to withstand land mine and enemy mortar. So it looks like the designers of the MedUAV have a tough task on hand for the next twenty four months. That said, let’s hope that they succeed and make the dangerous task of transporting injured soldiers lot safer and quicker.

It would be more effective and less costly to guarantee that medical personnel on the battlefield are treated according to the rule of war and the Geneva Convention.
