A high power, large laminated ceramic capacitor was announced by Murata Manufacturing Co Ltd. Apparently, this capacitor is being used in a plug-in hybrid electric scooter. The capacitor being made of inorganic materials has a very high heat resistance. The ceramic capacitor has a capacity per unit volume of 2.4μF/cm3 and also has a very high ripple current of 1.56A/cm3. Though it is more expensive than others in the market, it definitely has its advantages due to the resistance to heat. Murata has used metal terminals in order to separate the capacitor from the mounting board. Also, using a copper-based metal has the added advantage of using a reflow process when mounting the capacitor. Thus, the electric scooter seems to be holding a lot of promise for the future and may inspire many other EV soon, as the capacitors are getting more advanced. The scooter was released by Vectrix Corp in 2007 and costs $9395.
