New Delhi is gearing up big time for 2010 Commonwealth Games. Not only is the city getting a revamp - longer metro routes and new buses are being talked of. But the authorities are taking care of first thing first - teaching Cab and Rickshaw drivers in New Delhi - English. Classes would commence from July and according to V. S. Madan, the city Transport Commissioner all drivers are required to pass a language proficiency exam each year, together with their vehicle roadworthiness test.
Drivers will undergo 2,000-word vocabulary after 4 years of training and will be given English lessons on audio tapes to play in their vehicles while waiting for fares. If the drivers take the test as required they would be able to guide the tourist with ease by the time the game takes place.
