It’s been long since we came across a really innovative ad. I thought those brains in the ad agencies were staling, perhaps the men were out breading them for something actually awesome. Such is this new magazine ad for the MINI Cabrio convertible, which uses augmented reality (AR) to churn an interactive, eye popping commercial from 2D magazine ad, created by Munich, Germany agencies Buzzin Monkey and die agentour GmbH.

Nothing new with augmented reality, but the usage here is path defining. If you are richer than me and own a webcam, then you’re up for the ad. Grab onto a mag that features a MINI ad, hold a webcam up to it and you will see a 3D model of the MINI appear in front of you on the page seeming as if you are holding it right in your hand. The closer you move the webcam the bigger the size of the convertible, and vice versa. Twist it, turn it, as you like, and get a feel of a test drive in the ad itself.

I have to say - that is one of the coolest auto ads I’ve ever seen... but I’m still pissed at Mini - they dangled out the Mini-E and made all of us EV enthusiasts drool. Then a week later, they announce that the Mini-e will never go to production, that the results of the current 500-unit lease will be incorporated into some BMW product. Shame on Mini!
