Ultra-low cost mini cars are creating a lot of speculation in India. Indian automaker Tata’s low cost mini is in the final stages of development and is likely to be on the roads next year. Nissan is also preparing a $2,500 car for India and expects to put it on the roads by 2010.

Nissan appears to be in a mood for a global launch of its mini and there are plans, which say that Nissan’s mini could reach US shores as well. Nissan is looking at US, Canadian, European, and Japanese markets for its mini car. Though additional safety features and reinforcements will take the cost to $3,000 in these markets, it still remains substantially low.

To pull down costs, Nissan may outsource a chunk of production to Indian motorcycle manufacturer Bajaj Auto. Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn will have a meeting with Bajaj bosses soon to discuss the deal. It will be interesting to see how Nissan’s venture finally shapes up, the ultra low cost minis have caught the attention of the world and there will be a keen eye on what Tata, or for that matter Nissan comes up with.
