With the spirit of a daredevil and a desire for adventure, Ted Ciamillo has planned to do the unthinkable. He plans to sail across the Atlantic in a pedal-powered submarine. The “Subhuman Project” will see Ciamillo pedaling across the ocean in his 1.2 meter wide and 5 meter long “wet” submarine. The sub is built of light and tough materials; stainless steel for the frame, a polycarbonate shell, and a propulsion system made of aluminum and titanium.
This “wet” sub will remain full of water at all times, and Ciamillo will breathe using scuba gear or specially adapted snorkel. The sub will float about 2 meters below the surface of water and he will pedal using the arm-and-leg driving system. He will, however come to the surface at night to sleep in a tent erected on top of the sub. If all goes according to plan, the 3,700 km journey from Cape Verde to Barbados in the Caribbean should be complete in 50 days.
