There’s a massive rail infrastructure, and many parts of it are unused or underused. A low cost solution like the RailPod could ply on these roads, providing efficiency and cost effectiveness. The RailPod moves on a single track, using gyros to stay in balance. This driverless pod can hold two passengers facing away from each other, and uses a number of sensors like sonar or lidar to steer clear of obstructions.
Use of a single track means that the pod does not take much space, and the other track is available for use by pods going in the opposite direction. All a passenger needs to do is swipe a credit card and enter the destination, the Pod will do the rest. It’s still a concept and the Boston-based start-up is looking for investors to make the project a reality.
