Only few cars after the World War II had the wherewithal to remain relevant and competitive for many years. The 2CV from the French automaker, Citroen was one such name, which held firm ground until the end of the nineties.

Distinctively known as the umbrella on wheels or the ugly duckling amongst the Dutch, the 2CV was one of the most popular cars of the era. An antique that would make your grandpa go nostalgic, if he ever gets a glimpse of this French economy car.

However, the good news unlike the other nostalgia stories, which end up making people blubber, could be you buying one of these for your beloved oldie. Not from a cocky auction of vintage cars but a brand new one for Citroen is reintroducing the avant-garde version of the umbrella on wheels.

It would definitely be faster and safer than the vintage one, which collectively proved to be the reasons for the nemesis of the older version. Style will be an additional entity, blustering a meticulously modern elucidation of the classic design.

Citroen is following in the steps of the VW Beetle with the difference being that it will come with a hybrid engine. 2CV will be a platform for Citroen’s green technology and will target the rewarding family car market.

Just to make sure the nostalgia is incorporated the 2CV will come with same arched bonnet, slab sides and sheltered rear wheels. For the buffs craving for high-end technological equipping, it will carry sat-nav and connectivity for the newest handheld doodads.

The on going speculation is that the concept might well be out by 2009 however, nothing is known about the production fixtures. What we do know is that the company will place it above the C3 and it will bear a premium car pricing.

All in all, another two years and you could take care of your oldie while ill have better competition to keep track off, for I hardly find anyone that gives the Beetle and the Mini Cooper a run for their money !
