To improve the safety features in its fleet, Mercedes-Benz will introduce a semi- automatic braking system in its new S-Class and CL models which will be available in Germany from September. The system will be integrated into the Pre-Safe safety system and would warn the deriver with an optical and sound signal when it senses an obstacle ahead.
The interesting feature of the system is its ability to calculate the optimum brake pressure to reduce the braking path. An innovative feature is the automatic activation of 40 per cent of the maximum braking power, incase the driver fails to respond to the third signal. However, if the driver still fails to react, then the Pre-Safe brake reduces the collision force.
The system is provided with the distance control and brake assistant only and fetches 2,668 euros (3,355 dollars). Mercedes has successfully tested the system but needs more enhancement before installing in the fleet.
