Four senators — Dianne Feinstein, Dick Durbin, Olympia Snowe, and Lincoln Chafee are trying to force a ‘Ten in Ten’ on Detroit for increasing Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) to 37 MPG by 2017 for all vehicles. They accused Detroit of intentionally avoiding production of vehicles with better fuel economy.
With this proposal, the senators believe America can save up to 2.5M barrels of oil each day. The bill also makes it mandatory for installation of an on-board mileage displays by 2013.
The proposal like all other plans, is received, with mixed reaction. Chrysler’s VP of communications Jason Vines says the plan is not feasible while Toyota’s Jo Cooper expressed interest. Nevertheless, it would definitely be nice to put into effect such law. Maybe it could make this world a safer place.
