A special version Volvo C30 will hit the streets in 2008. Volvo has further refined its engine technology to make the new C30 the fuel miser it is. Apparently, the new C30 will take on the Volkswagen Golf BlueMotion, which is set for a debut in Frankfurt this year.

Special version of the Volvo C30 goes 100km in 4.5liters and releases less than 120grams of CO2 per km. Also included in the new car will be the Powershift gearbox from Volvo. The Powershift gearbox helps reduce fuel consumption by nearly 8 percent.

Aerodynamics of the car have been improved to help lower fuel consumption. The chassis now sits lower and the rear roof spoiler, rear bumper, underbody panels are all new. 16-inch wheel rims have been optimized for aerodynamics.

The 1.6L, 105hp turbodiesel engine has been given a more optimal cooling system. A new generation of low friction tyres works to reduce rolling friction and higher gearing for the third, fourth and fifth gears play their part in saving fuel. Additional savings come from the optimization of powertrain efficiency.

For car buyers in Sweden, buying this car could be more economical as buyers of environmental cars (cars with emissions less than 120g/km) get a state-sponsored cash-back of 10,000 kronor. Pricing has not been revealed yet but it should remain in the range of 20,000 Euros.

Announcement of the special version of the Volvo C30 comes close on the heels of the new Volkswagen Golf BlueMotion. These cars have much in common, their fuel-efficiency is the same and so are the methods they employ to reduce fuel consumption. This is going to be a tough competition, and both will have to work hard to get the upper hand.
