Stopping vehicles moving at high speed, without doing any considerable damage is an ardent task, especially if the driver isn’t all that enthusiastic about stepping on the brakes. The Safe Quick Undercarriage Immobilization Device (SQUID) could counter the problem, to a huge extent. This small, light and cheap (cost under $1000) 18-inch disk throws out Spiderman style sticky tentacles at vehicles passing over it.

The target of these tentacles is the vehicles axle, and as they stick on the axle and absorb all the kinetic energy, the vehicle comes to a halt, without any lethal damage. The video shows the system going against a pickup truck moving at 35mph, and stopping it effectively. It needs to do much better than that to become practically useful, and the makers are aiming to stop a 5000 pound truck moving at 120mph.
