The Humvee was originally envisioned as a general purpose utility vehicle to replace the Jeep. Military Humvees were created for a tougher look, but due to lack of protection from various explosives the military is planning to modify the version to give its soldiers a better chance at surviving.
One of the primary components used in this vehicle is Balsa wood. Despite being very soft, balsa is classified as a hardwood, and is the softest commercial hardwood, making it a popular material for building light yet stiff structures. That along with fiberglass, foam and carbon reinforcements all held together with resin replace the metal body parts, making the vehicle lighter.
These entire list of resources indirectly allow the use of extra armor which increases the safety level. That along with the reduced fuel consumption makes the Humvee an ideal vehicle for the Army.
