Indian carmaker Tata Motors is soon to develop a very low-cost budget car, which has been codenamed X1. This dream project of Ratan Tata, the leader of the Tata group is to get launched by 2008.
The X1 will feature a unibody construction and without compromising on safety standards. The company is looking for a material other than sheet metal which will serve the purpose of reducing weight and cost.
The car will be having a 600cc two or three cylinder four-stroke engine. Tata Motors is tapping the huge motorcycling industry for the power train and running gear components. The car with is expected to give a mileage of 20-25 kmpl.
The engine will be developed in such a way that it will be able to run on LPG/CNG or petrol. The car will be priced at just 1900 Euros.
