On the surface, it is a $80 VW Golf that can better the times of $1.4 million Bugatti Veyron. Dig a bit deeper, and the Golf has a 700bhp 1850cc turbocharged engine. With that power, it can go zero to 60mph in just 2.36 seconds, beating the Veyron’s time of 2.5 seconds. Andy Waite of Fordham, Cambridgeshire, UK bought the 1979 Volkswagen for just £50 ($80) and then spent another £60,000 ($99,000) on its modifications.
Quarter mile time of the Golf is also quicker than that of the mighty Veyron, but the Golf tops out at 180 mph which is much lower than the 253 mph top speed of the Veyron. Once Andy’s car reaches 160mph, he can only drive straight because the steering goes wobbly. Well, you just can’t beat a Veyron all out, but that Andy’s car can better Bugatti’s beast is a great achievement in itself. He isn’t going to stop just yet, he aims to complete the quarter mile in 9 seconds on his street legal Golf.
