Notorious gas-guzzling Hummers are on the way to become synonymous with fuel sippers, that is, if Raser Technologies is successful in its new project. They are using the Hummer H2 as a base for a new technology, that they claim will give the SUV an efficiency of nearly 100mpg. The E-REV (Extended Range Electric Vehicle) powertrain works similar to the powertrain of the Volt, and is best suited for large vehicles like SUVs and light trucks.
The vehicle can run 40 miles on electricity alone, after that a four-cylinder gasoline engine kicks in to power the batteries. A prototype vehicle will debut at the Society of Automotive Engineers World Congress in Detroit later this month.
